VST FireRAID

Mendocino, CA--- August 31, 1999 ---VST to offer FireWire RAID Solution for Apple Macintosh Series Computers

VST FireRAID™ is Worlds Smallest High Performance RAID Array

BOSTON, August 31st, 1999 - VST Technologies, Inc. a leading FireWire™, USB and notebook peripherals developer, today announced the VST FireRAID Array designed to work with all FireWire equipped Macintosh computers from Apple® Computer, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL).

The VST FireRAID Array includes custom hardware and software that allow multiple FireWire Hard Drives to be used together as a high performance RAID array by providing striping, mirroring and HFS volumes, all simultaneously. Like the VST FireWire Hard Drives, the smallest and most compact in the world, FireRAID is designed to be very small and compact . Measuring only 4.9in Wide x 6.8in Depth and 9in High, FireRAID is actually portable, and includes built-in Li-Ion battery backup capable of running the array for up to an hour in the event of loss of AC power.

Used as an array, multiple drives provide significantly increased bandwidth in the form of Striping (RAID level 0). Striping is a method of streaming data to/from multiple drives simultaneously to ach ieve higher bandwidth. FireRAID also provides mirroring. Mirroring (RAID level 1) provides an identical, redundant copy of the volumes data on two drives in the array, so that a single drive failure will not result in loss of important data. In addition, FireRAID allows standard HFS volumes to be created. When Apple updates FireWire to allow for booting in the future, FireRAID will allow booting from HFS as well as mirrored volumes.

The VST FireRAID Array tower consists of a very compact enclosure that houses up to four VST FireWire Hard Drives in any size or capacity ranging from 2GB to 14GB each. All existing VST FireWire Hard Drives may be used with FireRAID, and all of VST's existing ultra-compact FireWire Hard Drives may be used in the FireRAID Tower. The tower provides all FireWire connections to each drive which may be hot-plugged in to any available array slot. In addition, the tower provides uninterruptible power, with built-in Li-Ion battery backup, and may be powered from any AC power source worldwide.

The Company plans to demonstrate FireRAID this week at Seybold in San Francisco.

The VST FireRAID Array towers may be connected together to form larger arrays (up to 16 drives are supported). Data throughput is expected to range form 25 to 40MB/Sec (Mega Bytes per Second), depending on the particular mechanisms used. FireRAID is based on SoftRAID from SoftRAID, LLC. SoftRAID has been shipped on every Apple MacOS Server since 1994, and is recognized as the fastest, most reliable software based RAID solution available to Macintosh users.

"VST is both pleased and excited to be the first company to provide a FireWire based RAID solution. High performance from such a small array that is portable and will stand up to abuse should allow many mobile applications that were previously unachievable. Built-in battery backup provides an uninterruptible power source that guarantees data integrity in the event of an AC power loss, even over an extended period." Says Vincent Fedele, Chairman and Founder of VST Technologies, Inc.

"SoftRAID has long been recognized as the leading RAID solution for Apple Macintosh users, and their outstanding reputation integrates well with VST's objective of creating best-in-class products for Macintosh users." adds Fedele.

FireWire Standard

FireWire is integrated into every Power Macintosh G3 series product configuration, and is expected to proliferate quickly to all platforms and manufacturers over the next several quarters. FireWire, a technology invented by Apple, is a high-speed serial interface and was adopted by the IEEE as a standard (IEEE 1394) in 1995. FireWire is revolutionizing desktop and portable digital video by allowing broadcast-quality video authoring at low consumer price points. It's fast, supporting transfer speeds to 400Mbps. It's scalable, supporting up to 63 devices. It's hot-pluggable, so users may unplug/re-plug devices on the fly without the need to shutdown, or restart their computers. VST offers portable and desktop hard drives, Zip Drives in 100MB and 250MB capacities, PC Cards for mobile users and RAID arrays all in FireWire solutions.

In addition to cross-platform compatibility with Microsoft Windows 98 SE and Windows 2000, the FireWire standard is being chosen for an ever-increasing array of consumer multimedia devices like set-top boxes, digital VCRs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, CD-R, CD-RW, DAT and dozens of digital camcorders and professional still image cameras - all equipped with FireWire built-in.
