SoftRAID 2.x Features & Specifications

SOFTRAID is a disk driver and formatting application which integrates RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) technology to give even faster performance and/or added redundancy. SoftRAID has the fastest driver latency in the market, and is widely acclaimed as the best overall driver for IO intensive tasks, such as Servers, Databases, PhotoShop, code compiling, and any other Macintosh use where peak disk performance is a requirement.

The current shipping version is SoftRAID 2.2.2. (as of June 15, 2000).

The updater from any 2.0 or later version to 2.2.2 is available for downloading. Apple bundles SoftRAID with all servers and multiple drive configurations of G3 computers, and you can get your updater for any 2.x version from us for no charge.

SoftRAID 2.2.2 is a free update from any 2.0.x or later version of SoftRAID. Update to 2.2.2 as soon as possible. SoftRAID version 2.2.2 is a requirement for using SoftRAID with Mac OS 9.0, or with any of the G4 Power Macintosh series computers.

HISTORICAL NOTES: Apple's RAID was initially released in 1994, and was bundled with all Apple Workgroup Servers (except for some low end educational servers such as the 6150). The last version of Apple's RAID was 1.5.3. A licensed user of previous 1.x versions of Apple is entitled to upgrade to SoftRAID 2.x for $99. The last version of Apple's RAID is 1.5.3. There will be no further releases of Apple's RAID, as it has been phased out in favor of SoftRAID.

SoftRAID 2.0 was compatible with Mac OS System 8.1 and HFS+ volumes. SoftRAID 2.1 added an HFS+ checkbox to save users a step in creating HFS+ volumes. 2.1.5 - 2.1.7 added compatibility with additional SCSI hardware, such as hardware RAID controllers, and fixed a couple minor driver bugs. To use SoftRAID with Mac OS 8.6 or later, update to the latest version of SoftRAID to avoid problems.
