SoftRAID 2.2 Press Release
Mendocino, CA--- September 16, 1999--SoftRAID upgraded to version 2.2, required for Mac OS 9 installation.
Friday, SoftRAID, LLC announced SoftRAID 2.2, another free upgrade to the companies leading RAID software for Mac OS.
SoftRAID 2.2 features full compatibility with Mac OS 9, the new Power Macintosh G4 series computers, Apples's Open Firmware, and all Mac OS Servers. SoftRAID 2.2 supports any PCI based Mac OS system running System 7.1 or later.
SoftRAID 2.2 adds support for spinning drives down in sleep mode, and has fully tested compatibility with the ATTO ExpressPCI UL2D dual channel SCSI cards, and with the newly announced Adaptec PowerDomain 39160 Ultra160 SCSI card.
All SoftRAID users purchasing the Power Macintosh Series G4 systems, or those who upgrade their Mac OS to Mac OS 9.0 must first upgrade SoftRAID to version 2.2, as otherwise SoftRAID volumes will not mount under Mac OS 9.
"It is important for existing users to get this upgrade, as previous versions of the SoftRAID driver cannot be used with Mac OS 9.", said Mark James, President of SoftRAID, LLC. "Especially as there is no cost associated with this upgrade."
"SoftRAID has now offered its customers FREE updaters to its leading Mac OS disk driver software for almost two years now, a rarity these days, as larger companies typically charge users for simple bug fixes and minor feature additions. We chose to think different. - We will keep SoftRAID updaters free except when there is a major feature upgrade.", Mr. James added. "We anticipate one more free updater this year, before we move on to SoftRAID 3.0, which will be a major enhancement to SoftRAID, and a pay upgrade."
SoftRAID is considered the leading Mac OS disk driver, integrating standard disk management functionality with RAID technology, allowing users to manage standard and RAID volumes on the same drives, including both HFS and HFS+ file formats.
The SoftRAID RAID application is targeted at WorkGroup Servers, Filemaker database Servers, and other Mission Critical applications where driver stability and faster driver performance are critical. Every version of SoftRAID is extensively tested with AppleShare and Server related applications such as Retrospect to ensure continued reliability.
SoftRAID (or Apple's RAID) has shipped on every Mac OS WorkGroup Server from Apple since 1994, and is also bundled with other SCSI manufacturers, such as Initio and Hammer Storage. SoftRAID is not available in retail stores, as it is sold exclusively through the SoftRAID Web Site featuring all-electronic delivery. The suggested retail price is $149, and upgrades from any previous version of Apple's RAID or SoftRAID 1.5 or earlier are $99.
